Tuition woes

August 30, 2007

Recently I’ve taken on an interest in teaching tuition as a form of personal financial assistance, so I went around my neighbourhood giving out flyers.

This mother called me, and asked if I am familiar with Primary School syllabus. Honestly, I have no clue what the Primary School syllabus is other than the one 10 years ago. She wanted math tuition for her P.5 child, so I told her that I’ll go read up first.

I realised, after browsing through a few math assessment books, that I still have problems of what I had when I was in P5; solving problem sums. Seriously, kids these days are poor souls.

Try this:
If a teacher gives 8 cookies to each of her student she’ll have 12 cookies left.
If a teacher gives 10 cookies to each of her student, she’ll be short of 14.
How many students does the teacher have?

Solve this without using algebra, and try imagining how you’d explain it to a clueless P5 boy.

That’s probably me with math.

Virtual escape

August 27, 2007

I’m always logged on to MSN when I attend classes, even if I’m not chatting.

An inclination to want to escape the claustrophobia?

This guy I just know

August 23, 2007

There’s this module that I have to attend, called Finishing Touch, similar to BESE class we attended back in Poly (class on basic etiquette).

There were rumours that the instrutor is a hum sup lou, he looks like one first time I saw him, and it seemed that he openly announced it in class. But deviating from that impression, I think he’s absolutely hilarious; and it seems like I’m one of the few who think so.

He said something funny about 2 Jeremys in class. He called on one Jeremy (an Indian-mix) while marking attendance, referring from a list that has all our photos. The other Jeremy answered, and he is as far away from an Indian skin tone as the North and South pole can be.

Instructor: Jeremy.
Jeremy 1 (The fair Jeremy): Yes.
Instructor: Are you Jeremy Arlduoss?
Jeremy 1: Err.. no.
Instructor: No wonder, You’re Jeremy Gan right? I was wondering hooww did you change so much over one year?? What kind of whitening cream did you use man?

That cracked me up totally. I know it sounds quite lame from this typed dialogue, but it’s the kind of situation where you just have to be there. I laughed continuously for a good 5 minutes, when others seemed to have gotten over the short tickle in their ribs in 3 seconds.

They must think I’m nuts.

Way way way overdue

School’s starting next week; finally the 4-months long holiday is coming to a close. Haven’t been reflecting alot, or thinking up any profound things to write. I lack inspiration!

I’ve been lucky to have gone to so many places within the span of one month; places with such different extremities – Shanghai, with its many many skyscrapers, beautiful night lights and air so polluted I didn’t see the sky for the 8 days I was there; then there was Kapalai/Sipadan for a week and Tioman for a weekend, all of just sun, sand and blue skies, and of course the diving. Shiok.

Shanghai, Shanghai

August 7, 2007

After a loong absence, here’s Shanghai, a week late.

Shanghai is a mixture of the new and the old. It’s want to modernise is greater than many rural areas’ ability to catch up. While many Shanghainese has lifestyles equivalent or even more expensive than Singaporeans’, there’re people whose lifestyles are constant struggles to live up to the city’s expensive taste.

Many people asked why I was able to go so many places this summer; for Shanghai, our airfares and accomodation was sponsored by a contact from one of our Prof. Guess I got lucky.

The buildings and highways there are majestic. I’m not so much of a city girl, so I didn’t gain much enlightment from the concrete jungle. What I gained are probably cheap tailor-made suits and cheong-sam that fit very well, blacker lungs, and weight. It was a fun-filled trip, nonetheless; lots of laughters, lots of jabbing at one another. This guy was interesting. He held this huge card and stood along this very busy underground tunnel. Basically the card read that he broke up with his girlfriend on impulse, and is regretting hugely on the decision. So he’s getting signatures in hope to redeem his mistakes.

22.jpg
There’s the people signing. Hopfully he’s succesful. Though I dont see much of a link between remorse and a public petition for something so personal.
